The more time goes by, the more obvious the fundamental breakdown of our most important institutions. Americans aren’t in denial at this point so much as completely flummoxed as to what to do to fix it.
It’s very easy to play the blame game and God knows there’s enough of it to go around. But I don’t think this is a moment for pointing fingers. We need to summon something powerful and strong from within ourselves now, something that can’t emerge when it’s blocked by the judgmental mind.
We don’t need pictures of cross hairs and we don’t need pictures of guillotines. What we need is a commitment to decency and honor and respect that goes way beyond whether someone is on the Left or on the Right. It’s not a political centrism but a spiritual one we urgently need right now, a meeting in the middle not with our analytical minds but with our hearts.
My career has given me great exposure to this country, not just geographically but socio-economically. I’ve spent real time among billionaires and I’ve spent real time among the poorest of the poor. And because I’ve had the privilege of being present for what has been for many people their most vulnerable hour, I’ve seen where all of us are the same. All of us have within us a deep intelligence and potential for nobility, often obscured, but always there. It has been hidden by the world we have created for ourselves, but it is desperately needed for the very reason that the world we have created for ourselves is now destroying us.
No data can save us. No technology can save us. No amount of money can save us. No, the only thing that can save this world is something that’s not of this world. Some call it God, some call it love, some call it Higher Power - what matters is not what we call it, but that we call it. There is a saying in Alcoholics Anonymous, “Your best thinking got you here.” That’s not just a message for the addict today; it’s a message for all humanity.
Our lack of reverence, our lack of ethics, our lack of mercy, and yes, our lack of love - have led us to where we are today. And finding those things within ourselves, we will grow to become people wise and powerful enough to create from the ashes of our current chaos a kairos moment of regeneration and rebirth.
None of us can know exactly how that will happen, or when, because miracles are non-rational. They come from another part of the mind. But more and more people are awakening from the dream that what we’re doing now is working, beginning in their own way to ask themselves if maybe, just maybe, humanity in our arrogance has not in fact gotten it all wrong.
In ancient Greek tragedies there was a technique employed by the greatest playwrights, called Deux Ex Machina. Just when it seemed that all hope was lost, a Greek god would appear to save the day. I remember when I was young, asking myself what kind of a god would wait ‘til people were scared out of their wits before showing up. I finally realized that this wasn’t about a god waiting to show up; it was about things having to get that bad before people realized the god was there.
God isn’t letting children starve; we’re letting children starve. God isn’t desecrating the earth; we’re desecrating the earth. God isn’t selling our souls to the highest bidder; we’re selling our souls to the highest bidder. And we ourselves are responsible for changing. We’re used to the question, “How long oh God, how long?” But that’s not a question we should be asking Him. It’s a question He is asking us.
I have never read one of your books. These few paragraphs are the mostly beautiful, eloquent, and timely messages to humanity! My love for you, is overflowing! I pray, that the world reads these few paragraphs, and their souls are touched. You have connected with my innermost feelings of the way God works through us. These are the things that life is all about. People want to know, “what they are here for ?”. You, have awakened the, “Sleeping Giant”. Now one seed of love as been planted! It is up to us to plant them all over the world, and especially here in America. We are the world! It is time! I think every person feels it in their soul! You may try to ignore it, but at times, it overwhelms us. What can we do? The possibilities are endless! God and the Universe calls. Listen and you will hear. The birds, the animals, and the mountains are beckoning.
Thank you, for these words of true wisdom at such a critical time in this world. I will be looking for your book:)
Humanity has always been a shameful existence. Humans are the cruelest creatures on this planet. But I can't honestly say it's all our own fault. We come here open and trusting. We don't instantly think mommy and daddy are lying to me. We don't instantly think my teacher is brainwashing me. We trust, we believe and relatively few ever realize it's all a lie, repeated by those who were told the lie. Jesus on the cross said "Father, forgive them. They know not what they do." And that's true of everyone, no matter what we think of them, or ourselves for that matter. Self blame is no better than blaming others. We can only do what we know until we know differently. Pulling away from collective consciousness can be very lonely at times.
