Forgiving Every Moment Before Now

Our greatest power to change the future is our ability to change our mind about the past.

In A Course in Miracles it says we’re reborn in any moment when we don’t bring the past into the present.

Whether we think in secular terms with concepts like “the inner child,” or spiritually with images like “the Christ child,” the meaning is the same. The power of the baby Christ in his mother’s arms lies precisely in the fact that he comes with total love into the world, bringing no past with him. That’s true not only of every child’s birth into the world, but reflects as well the spiritual child born in any instant when we choose to give it birth.

Living fully in the now, what in the Course is called “the Holy Instant,” we let go our attachment to both past and future and live only in the light of love. This automatically heals the past and aligns the future with the highest possibilities for what can happen next. Our greatest power to change the future is our ability to change our mind about the past.

Linear time is itself a part of what Einstein referred to as an “illusion of consciousness,” as past and future exist only in our minds. The enlightened state is one in which 1) we see all people and circumstances as they are now, not as who they were before this moment; and 2) we see all people and circumstances through the lens of forgiveness. It is a choice whether or not to drag the past into the present. If we’re willing to let the present be unencumbered by images from the past, then every moment becomes a new beginning.

Forgiveness means a willingness to look beyond the darkness of the world to the light in every heart, beyond the mistakes of personality to the innocence in every heart, and beyond the problems of the world to the miracles that are available in the presence of love.

Imagine looking at New Year’s Eve as a portal through which we can enter into miraculous possibilities for 2022. If you’re interested in entering that portal, consider this….

All the love that was given you before this moment, and all the love you have given, was real. It has eternal bearing on your life and cannot be lost or destroyed.

Any lovelessness towards you, coming from you or from anyone else, was ultimately illusory in nature and has no bearing on your future unless you carry it forward. The universe is ready to self-correct, healing any condition of lovelessness, as long as you are willing to let go your attachment to the past.

A bit of mental exercise to begin the new year:

1. I release all those who have harmed me this year. I can have a grievance or a miracle, but I cannot have both. I choose a miracle.

2. I release myself from self-condemnation for mistakes of commission or omission that I made this year. I will feel forgiven to the extent that I choose to forgive others as well.

3. I release into the hands of God my fear of illness, environmental destruction, financial uncertainty or political corruption. I pray for a miracle, that the world might be made right.

4. I commit that in 2022 I will rise to the occasion of becoming the person I wish to be, contributing to the world as I wish to contribute, and loving the world as I know that I should love it.

5. I am open to radical change in the direction of love, within myself and in the world.
