A RETURN TO "A RETURN TO LOVE"

Some books you read over and over again

My first book, A RETURN TO LOVE: Reflections of the Principles of A Course in Miracles, was published in 1992 and was America’s fifth bestselling book that year. I remember so many things as though they were yesterday — from writing the book, to its publication, to first being on The Oprah Winfrey Show, to watching as the book took flight into the hands of readers around the world.

This one paragraph from the book has had its own life, of course:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You’re playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

So many people have told me over the years how much that paragraph has meant to them. And I always say to them, “If you like the paragraph, you’ll love the book! It has lots of paragraphs!”

I haven’t taught on A RETURN TO LOVE in more than a decade, but I’m about to do a six week seminar based on its reflections. It will be fun to revisit the book and hopefully to learn from it.

The book's simplicity and clarity was a blessing on us then, and continues to yield some beautiful truths. Books might age, but miracles do not.
